Strabag Oman has won a contract from Oman’s Ministry of Transport and Communication to build a 100 km section (lot 2) of the 400 km long road between the city of Sinaw and the industrial zone in Duqm. The scheme in the south of the country is worth € 88 million (US$ 120 million).

“The new road is being built next to the existing old roadway. With 90 % of the road passing through desert-like terrain, the project presents an enormous challenge in terms of the procurement of construction materials and logistics,” said Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel.

The new carriageway will be asphalt-paved and will consist of one lane of traffic and one emergency lane in each direction. Construction will entail 4.2 million m3 of earthworks and the placement of some 60,000 m3 of concrete for the drainage system. The project also includes street lighting and the safety structures.

Construction will start in January 2014 and is expected to last 24 months.
