Austrian contractor Strabag is to build a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Tanzania's main city of Dar es Salaam.

The €134 million (US$ 178 million) order includes the rehabilitation and expansion of a total of three main traffic arteries with a length of 21.1 km linking the city and its port with the western inland, Burundi and Rwanda.

The BRT contract is divided into two components. The first comprises the development of the road from Magomeni to Kimara including 15 bus stops and the Kimara Terminal and the Ubongo Terminal. The second involes the rehabilitation of the road from Magomeni to Kivukoni, Kawawa Road from Magomeni to Morocco, and Msimbazi Road from Fire to Kariakoo, including 14 bus stops and the Morocco Terminal.

The project will see the construction of a central bus lane and the existing roadways widened to take a dual-carriageway. New bicycle lanes and paved pedestrian pavements are also included. A bus stop will be built in the centre lane every 500 to 700 m, and the stations of Kimara, Ubungo and Morocco are to be developed.

Additional works include laying drinking water pipes, the development of the wastewater system and the telecommunication network, as well as the construction of street lighting and traffic facilities.

Construction is set to begin this month and is due to be completed by February 2015.
