Skanska begins preconstruction work on New York SPARC Project

New York is one of the top ten most expensive cities in the world in which to build

Skanska has signed a contract with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to provide preconstruction and deconstruction services for the Science Park and Research Campus Kips Bay (SPARC Kips Bay) project in New York City.

The contract, valued at US$59 million (approximately SEK650 million), is included in Skanska’s US order bookings for the first quarter of 2025.

As part of the agreement, Skanska will undertake preconstruction services and the deconstruction of existing buildings on the CUNY Hunter College Brookdale campus, where phase one of the SPARC project is set to take place.

According to Skanska, the first phase will involve the creation of over 55,700 sq m (600,000 sq ft) of educational facilities for the City University of New York (CUNY) and New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). The plans also include the development of a central public open space, known as SPARC Square, and the construction of an ADA-compliant pedestrian bridge on 25th Street, spanning the FDR Drive.

Preconstruction work began in late 2024, with groundbreaking for the project expected by the end of 2025. Deconstruction of existing campus buildings is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027.

The project includes demolishing sections of pre-existing seating and installing a new modular steel composite seating system to meet FIFA requirements.
