Salini Impregilo has signed a framework agreement on a hydroelectric power project in Tajikistan.

The company said agreements for the first phase of the project have been signed with the state-run energy company OJSC Rogun Hydropower. This US$ 1.95 billion phase will include the construction of a 335 m-high rockfill dam – the world’s tallest – on the Vakhsh River, in the country’s mountainous Pamir region.

Once completed, the Rogun Hydropower Project will include six turbines, each producing 66 MW of energy, reportedly combining for an output equivalent to three nuclear power plants.

When operational, Rogun is set to double Tajikistan’s energy production, assisting with the reduction of winter power shortages in the country, as well as boosting agricultural activity, through a more efficient irrigation system.

Significantly, the project will give Tajikistan the potential to offer energy to neighbouring countries, such as Pakistan and Afghanistan.
