The decision was made following a proposal by the Ministry of Transport to develop new terminals, access roads and utilities in the region.

The approved memorandum outlines the responsibilities of the Maritime Ports Administration National Company in initiating the necessary steps for approval documentation related to the project.

In September 2023, an investment of almost US$300 million was approved to enhance the operating capacity of the port.

On February 16, this year, the government rubber-stamped a decision to allocate over US$200 million for dredging works. These works are intended to bring the basins and navigable channels in Constanta Port to the projected level, ensuring optimal conditions for maritime activities.

Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu revealed that the project is estimated to cost a total of around €1.12 billion (US$1.22 billion) and will be deemed of high importance, allowing for streamlined procedures and expedited permits.

Grindeaunu said, “The project will facilitate the operation of large-capacity ships at the approximately 17 newly created berths on Pier III South and Pier IV South due to the large water depths in the area of the newly built quays.

“Achieving the investment objective will thus lead to an increase in the capacity of maritime transport of goods and, implicitly, to an increase in the volume of commercial exchanges.”
