Many of the world’s biggest football clubs are currently overhauling their famous stadia.

From Spain’s Real Madrid and Italy’s AC Milan to the venues for the upcoming and controversial Fifa World Cup in Qatar, we take a look at some of the more innovative construction projects in the football world.

‘Cathedral’ stadium chosen as ‘new San Siro’ in Milan

A stadium design from US-based architect Populous has been chosen as the replacement for the famous San Siro football stadium in Milan, Italy.

The Cathedral in Milan, home to famous club’s AC and Inter, will replace the current San Siro Stadium.

The ‘Cathedral’ will become the new home of Italian football giants AC Milan and Inter Milan, as well as being the centrepiece of a new sport and leisure neighbourhood in the city.

Video: Webuild announces Al Bayt Stadium open ahead of Qatar 2022

Webuild has confirmed the openining of the stadium, which will host Fifa’s Arab Cup, before matches at the 2022 Fifa World cup next year. Although not in Europe, much of the continent will be tuning in to the controversial event, which will be held in the winter for the first time in its history.

The Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar, built by Italian-based contractor Webuild, has now been officially declared open, ahead of the upcoming Fifa World Cup in 2022.

Laing O’Rourke hits Everton FC stadium milestone

UK construction company Laing O’Rourke has reached “major milestones” in the construction of Everton Football Club’s new football stadium.

The contractor has laid the first of the foundations for the new €580 million stadium, which is being built on the semi-derelict Bramley-Moore Dock on the River Mersey in Liverpool, England.

A government body has taken over China Evergrande Group’s soccer stadium with a view to selling it, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters in December last years, as the debt-laden property developer scrambles to meet liabilities.
