Construction has begun on a €290 million expansion of Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) Gdansk’s facilities in Poland.

The project, led by Belgian-based Besix Group, will deliver the Mott MacDonald-designed scheme which is set to increase marine berth handling capacity by up to 3 million TEU (20ft equivalent container units) a year.

According to DCT, the expanded berth will be able to handle vessels exceeding 18,000 TEU and will be equipped with five container cranes. Once complete, it will be among the largest container terminals within the Baltic Sea.
Maciek Kwiatkowski, DCT Gdansk chief executive officer, explained that the works would be scheduled to be complete by next autumn.

He said, “Getting to this stage was not easy, but today we can be proud that this major step for the Polish container industry has been made.

“Poland and the whole Baltic area have gained a new quality in deep-sea services with a multi-user container terminal capable of serving the world’s largest container vessels.”
