A consortium comprising Hochtief, Strabag and Qatari contractor Petroserv has won the € 265 million (US$ 290 million) contract to design and build the central section of a new sewerage network in Doha, Qatar.

The project is part of the refurbishment and expansion of the Qatari capital’s sewerage network in the historic south of the city. Hochtief says the network serves an area of 680 km2, and is being updated in response to rapid population growth in the area.

The central piece of infrastructure is a new 14.7 km long, 4.5 m diameter tunnel, which the consortium will design and build. It expects to use two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in the construction phase. Once the tunnels are constructed, they will be lined with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) membrane to protect the concrete from chemical degradation. Hochtief said this will give the sewer a 100 year design life.

Construction is expected to take 45 months, with completion due in early 2019.
