NCC lands tunnel project

10 December 2014

A SEK1.3 billion (€140 million) project to build the Bjørnegård Tunnel on the E16 expressway between Sandvika and Wøyen in Norway has been awarded to NCC by the Norwegian Road Administration.

The E16 is one of Norway’s busiest two-lane highways and the primary link between Oslo and Bergen. The Bjørnegård Tunnel will be part of the new E16 expressway and is designed to help to improve accessibility and enhance traffic safety, while also contributing to the development of Sandvika.

Håkon Tjomsland, business area manager for NCC Construction Norway, said, “This is the second billion-kronor contract we have secured from the Norwegian Road Administration during this quarter. We look forward to successful co-operation with our client and the road users that will be affected.”

The 2.3km-long new tunnel will comprise a two-lane dual carriageway. The assignment also includes a 290m-long connecting tunnel, as well as extensive road works where the E16 joins the E18.

Work will begin in January 2015 and continue until December 2019. NCC is currently working on several large-scale tunnel and bridge projects in Norway, including a 4.8km rail tunnel linking Larvik with Porsgunn, 150km southwest of Oslo.
