Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand under Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has been awarded a contract for the construction of three gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants in Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

The project will feature three 650MW class natural gas-fired units. It is estimated by one energy expert that the cost of building the plant will be around US$1.7 billion.

The power plants are expected to commence commercial operation in stages during the 2029 fiscal year with Mitsubishi Power supporting the reliable supply of electricity through the duration of the full-scope LTSA.

The project is a joint venture involving MHI and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, covering EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction). The collaboration between the two companies will see MHI providing gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and flue gas desulfurization systems, while Mitsubishi Electric will supply generators and electrical products.

The gas turbines will be capable of co-firing with hydrogen, and the plant’s design will allow for easy conversion to 100% hydrogen firing with minimal modifications.

With an eye on future decarbonisation efforts, Mitsubishi Power is said to be actively developing various technologies to support reliable power supplies both in Japan and internationally.
