Key contractor selected for US$10 billion New York bus terminal upgrade

US-based construction company AECOM Tishman said it was selected to manage the Dyer Avenue deck-overs project, the contracts for which are the first delivered on a massive US$10 billion overhaul of the Midtown Bus Terminal in New York City, US.

AECOM Tishman called the terminal upgrade megaproject “one of the most important infrastructure projects in the United States today.”

In July, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) authorised contracts worth $271 million for the Dryer Avenue deck-overs scheme. This segment includes construction of two decks over below-grade portions of Dyer Avenue and the Lincoln Tunnel Expressway in Midtown, Manhattan, New York City.

The new deck-overs will provide a staging area for city buses during the larger construction timeline. Before completion of terminal upgrade, the deck-overs area will be transformed into 3.5 acres of public green space.

Construction on the deck-overs is expected to start early this year.

According to AECOM Tishman, the new facility will replace the existing 73-year-old, functionally obsolete terminal with a world-class facility that is critical to the interconnected economies of New York and New Jersey. At present, it is the world’s busiest bus terminal

AECOM Tishman added, “Facilitating reliable and efficient bus service, the new terminal project will feature a new 2.1-million square-ft main terminal, a separate storage and staging building and new ramps leading directly into and out of the Lincoln Tunnel.

“The new terminal is designed to meet projected 2040-2050 commuter growth, provide a best-in-class customer experience that serves the region’s 21st century public transportation needs and improve the quality of life of the surrounding community.”

A temporary terminal is expected to open in 2028, with overall project completion scheduld for 2032.
