Images | 7 of the best photos from the world of construction in April
30 April 2025
The end of April 2025 is here, which means it is time for Construction Briefing to review some of the best photos from the construction sector taken around the world this month:
Contractors building HS2 have completed work on a pair of extensions to the southern portal of its longest tunnel to eliminate the possibility of ‘sonic boom’ being created by high-speed trains entering at 200mph. The structures, built at the southern end of the railway’s 10-mile Chiltern Tunnel north west of London, are near identical to those now under construction at its northern portal in Buckinghamshire. Construction of the Chilterns Tunnel, and its portal extensions was led by HS2’s main works contractor Align JV – that includes Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and Volker Fitzpatrick. The group finished building those at the southern end in January 2025, with the northern pair following in the autumn of this year. (Image courtesy of HS2)
After more than six years of work to build the tunnels and stations, a new phase has of work has begun on lines 16 and 17 of the Grand Paris Express project, with the installation of essential metro operation equipment and their initial testing. That includes 170,000km of fibre optic cable, including cables in the tunnels 30 metres below ground (Image courtesy of Grand Paris Express)
The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has revealed the winner of its Concrete in Life Photo of the Year – the global competition highlights the beauty and essential role that concrete plays around the world. Winner in the Beauty and Design category was Artemio Layno for their photo ‘Broken Building’ set in Amsterdam, Netherlands. (Image courtesy of GCCA)
