Hochtief subsidiary gets US$2.6bn to lead San Francisco airport modernisation

German-based Hochtief, a global engineering and infrastructure solutions provider, announced its US-based subsidiary Turner Construction received a US$2.6-billion contract as part of a modernisation scheme for the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in California, US.

The project seeks to expand the airport’s existing Terminal 3 and add a six-storey building for airline lounges and operational office space, said Hochtief.
A groundbreaking announcement was delivered on 6 September. Hochtief said Turner will lead the construction project alongside design-build partners Gensler and TEF (design companies based in San Francisco).
SFO update to focus on sustainability
Hochtief said sustainability will be a highlight of the scheme.
“A significant aspect of this project is its commitment to sustainability,” said Hochtief. “The terminal will incorporate energy-efficient systems, water-saving fixtures, and materials sourced from sustainable suppliers. The project aims to achieve LEED Platinum certification, demonstrating SFO’s dedication to environmental responsibility.”
The expansion is scheduled to open in autumn of 2027, with the eastern addition to Terminal 3 set to open in 2029.
