HCC wins India hydroelectric contract

India’s Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has been awarded an Rs 1597 crore (US$ 260 million) contract from THDC India Ltd to construct the Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Power project in Chamoli district of Uttrakhand.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract will run for four and a half years and covers civil works and hydro-mechanical works, including penstock steel liner of the hydroelectric power project.

The Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydel power project is a 444 MW (4x111 MW) run-of-river scheme on Alaknanda River, which is a major tributary of the river Ganga.

The work will see HCC construct a 65 m high concrete gravity dam as well as a coffer dam, de-silting chamber, 13.4 km long head race tunnel, surge shaft, pressure shaft, underground power house and cavern, surge tank, tail race tunnel and hydro mechanical works. HCC will use a tunnel-boring machine to excavate 12.5 km of the head race tunnel.
