A consortium led by FCC has won the US$ 700 million contract for three stations and 7 km of track on the Doha Metro red line project in Qatar.

A consortium led by FCC has won a € 506 million (US$ 700 million) contract from Qatar Railways to build a section of the Doha Metro’s red line. The other partners in the consortium besides the Spanish contractor are Archirodon (Greece), Yüksel (Turkey) and Petroserv (Qatar).

The contract includes building three elevated stations at Barwa Village, Al Wakrah and Qatar Economic Zone, and a 6.97 km section, plus tunnelling for the road at the entrance to Al Wakrah station. The execution period is 31 months and the project is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs.

The Doha metro scheme is proving to be a rich seam for European contractors, with major contract wins going to consortiums led by Vinci, Porr and Impregilo.

This win comes just six months after FCC obtained the largest international contract in its history, the construction of three lines of the Riyadh Metro, for over € 6 billion (US$ 8.3 billion). Other notable underground rail schemes for FCC include the Panama City Metro, built in partnership with Odebrecht of Brazil. The first line of this scheme will be inaugurated in April. The company has also constructed metro schemes in Canada and Romania.
