Electrical exports: Hydropower station boosts electrical production

Located at an altitude of over 1500 m in the Colombian Andes, the Porce III Hydroelectric project (HEP) will contribute 3106 GWh to the national grid annually when it is completed in 2010/2011. Constructed for utility company Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) in the Porce river basin, in the northeast of the state of Antioquia, it will be Columbia's fourth largest hydropower station.

It will also be the forth HEP along the Porce River and adds to the 31 others currently contributing to the national grid, according to South America Business Information. These not only power the country's homes and businesses but also add to Colombia's exports. In 2004 electricity production was 46.93 billion kWh, while consumption was 42.01 billion kWh. The 1.682 billion kWh surplus was sold, mainly to Ecuador.
