Designs revealed for $455m rebuild of Belmont Park horse racing venue
27 March 2024
Sports architecture firm Populous will act as lead designer on the $455 million construction of the new Belmont Park horse racing venue in Nassau County, NY, USA.
Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes, was the first location to host horse racing in the US, and the new racetrack aims to integrate 21st century technology while retaining the traditions of thoroughbred racing, according to Populous.
The new main building will have five levels above ground with an outdoor terrace at the top level under a canopy.
The entire structure will cover 275,000 sq ft (25,548 sq m), capable of seating 7,500 guests. It will feature several different club and dining spaces, food and beverage outlets, private suites and indoor and outdoor experiences.
There will be additional capacity in the ground-level ‘Mercado’ that can be used to support additional capacity of up to 50,000 guests for special events.
One of the main mandates Populous has to adhere to through the design is for Belmont Park to remain a park. A key element of the project involves unlocking additional green space by providing access to the racetrack’s infield. There will be two new tunnels under the track will provide the infield access without impacting racing.
David O’Rourke, president and CEO of the New York Racing Association (NYRA), said, “NYRA is committed to building a world-class destination that will set the global standard for a racing facility, and we thank Governor Hochul for the opportunity to completely re-imagine Belmont.”
Construction is due to start in 2025.
