The contractor has deployed multiple machines for the mechanical demolition of Galloway Hall, a six-storey student accommodation block that was built in 1971.

UNCW said: “Galloway hall has held as many as 400 residents but is no longer utilized and is beyond its serviceable life.

“This Demolition Plan applies to all physical abatement, demolition, and waste generating activities performed as a part of the remediation and demolition activities of the project.”

The project has a budget of roughly US$2 million and according to UNCW, “the project will include an environmental assessment, removal of any hazardous materials, the demolition, removal and disposal of the building and associated utilities, foundations, slabs, as well as the demolition, removal, and disposal of site improvements”.

Originally called “Dorm 71” and comprising a total area of 64,912 sq ft, Galloway Hall is of a steel frame, masonry veneer construction.

“It was the first residence hall built on the UNCW campus and was the first air-conditioned residence hall in the University of North Carolina system,” said UNCW.
