Manufacturer Cummins has unveiled a new, heavy-duty engine at Bauma 2013. The QSM12 complies with next year’s strict off-highway diesel exhaust emissions laws using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

The EU Tier IV/US Stage 4 Final-compliant QSM12 has a rated capacity of 250 to 382kW and has been designed for wheeled loaders, excavators and cranes.

Cummins chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger said the manufacturer had avoided the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in the development of the new model.

“The QSM12 is a heavy duty engine but is also compact – it is no larger or heavier than an 11 litre Tier III engine,” he said.

The lack of an EGR system means there is no need for a large radiator, helping to keep the engine as compact as possible.

Cummins also unveiled the Stage IV/Tier 4 Final-compliant 63 to 98kW QSF3.8 engine at the show. This model uses cooled EGR and SCR, but does not require a DPF. It is well-suited for smaller construction machines, such as skid steers, forklifts and compactors.
