Concealed underground canal to lead into new development in Saudi Arabia’s Neom

The directors of Saudi Arabia’s Neom special economic zone have revealed plans for another ambitious new development in the region.

Aquellum will be concealed from the outside along the Gulf of Aqaba coastline, built into a 450m-high mountain range and accessible by a concealed underground canal.

The new development, billed as a “luxury and experiential space” promises to “push the boundaries of conventional design and construction possibilities”.

However, there are few details yet on exactly what construction will involve, what the project will cost or when it will start.

Access to Aquellum will be via a floating marina where guests will board a specially design vessel to enter through the concealed underground canal.

The development itself, set within the mountain range, promises a 100m-high “vertical experience” with a courtyard space stretching from the water upwards.

The community will offer hotel accommodation, apartments, retail spaces, leisure and entertainment zones.

A boulevard winding through the courtyard will lead to a space called “the Generator”, which will house research labs for innovators and creative thinkers.

There will also be an internal transit system to allow access to upper floors, transporting residents and visitors to their homes and hotels, as well as rooftop gardens with coastal views.

The announcement about Aquellum is the latest in a spate of news about developments within Neom, including Norlana and two towers at Epicon, as well as Leyja, Siranna, and Utamo.
