Two subsidiaries of Bouygues Construction have won a HKD3.9 billion (€468 million) contract to extend the Tung Chung line of the Hong Kong Metro.

Dragages Hong Kong and Bouygues Travauz Publics will build the extension of the line to the west of Lantau Island for MTR Corporation, the operator of the Hong Kong metro.

Work will involve the construction of a 1.3km tunnel and the creation of a new station, Tung Chung West, which will be the new terminus of the line.

Bouygues said the construction of the tunnel would be a “considerable technical challenge” in view of the configuration of the site, the population density in the area, and the constraints associated with an urban environment.

Patrick IU, managing director of Dragages Hong Kong, said, “The entrances to the new station will provide natural light, and eco-responsible elements will be incorporated into the design of the surface facilities.”

The extension of the Tung Chung line is the fourth project carried out by Bouygues Construction teams for MTR Corporation Ltd, following the “Sha Tin to Central Link”, “Shek Yam to Mei Lai Road” and “Mei Lai Road to Hoi Ting Road” extensions.
