Bouygues in € 1.35 billion contract wins

French contractor Bouygues has been awarded two separate contracts totalling € 1.35 billion (US$ 1.79 billion).

The largest was a € 1.15 billion (US$ 1.52 billion) project to construct a 4.2 km undersea road tunnel in Hong Kong – a contract won by its Dragages Hong Kong and Bouygues Travaux Publics subsidiaries. It is the largest design-build contract ever awarded in Hong Kong, according to the company.

The twin-tube tunnel will be bored 50 m below sea level and feature two traffic lanes in each of its 14 m diameter tubes. The tunnel will link the New Territories, north of Hong Kong, to Lantau Island, where the international airport is located.

Bouygues said two tunnel boring machines would be used as well as ground-freezing technology, which it said would provide a watertight environment to enable these passages to be bored. The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2018.

Miami contract

Meanwhile, the company’s US-based Americaribe subsidiary teamed up with local contractor John Moriarty & Associates to win a €400 million (US$ 520 million) contract to build the first phase of a mixed-use project in Miami. Americaribe’s share of the contract is worth €200 million (US$ 260 million).

Awarded by real estate developer Swire Properties, the project involves developing an area of 505,000 m² close to downtown Miami, including constructing a shopping centre, two residential towers with 820 apartments and a hotel. Completion of the first phase is scheduled for the third quarter of 2015.
