Boskalis Australia, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Royal Boskalis Westminster, has been awarded the contract for the construction of a port for the Gorgon Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) project off the coast of Western Australia.

The contract value is approximately AU$ 809 million (US$ 744 million) and was awarded by Chevron Australia and the Kellogg Joint Venture - Gorgon.

Work is expected to start early next year and is due to be completed by the end of 2011.

The project includes the design and construct of a port including a material off-loading facility at Barrow Island, 50 km northwest off the coast of Western Australia. A roll-on-roll-off facility will also be constructed in addition to 200 m of quay walls and mooring dolphins.

Boskalis has been awarded the logistical and program management responsibility for part of the basic infrastructure.

In a statement, Boskalis CEO Peter Berdowski, said "I am delighted that Chevron has awarded this contract to Boskalis. This project fits well within our strategic focus on the oil and gas market segment and our expansion into marine contracting activities. After having worked intensively with the client in an ‘early contractor involvement' capacity, we look forward to making a significant contribution to the Gorgon development."
