A joint venture (JV), including UK-based contractor Balfour Beatty, has been awarded a US$257 million contract to build an all-weather waterpark in Hong Kong.

Gammon Construction, comprising Balfour Beatty and Asia-based construction and engineering group, Jardine Matheson, will undertake the construction of the main building structure at Ocean Park Water World, as well as the fit-out and installation of various indoor and outdoor attractions.

Gammon Construction will also carry out mechanical and electrical services installation at the 6,400 m2 park, plus further building services work to support the water park’s specialist systems, including the installation of wave generators and a water filtration plant.

The venue’s main building will feature extensive glass walling and shell-shaped roofing, along with a translucent skylight system, which will reduce the requirement for artificial lighting.

Gammon will take a proactive role in the value engineering process, in collaboration with Ocean Park Corporation, with lean technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) leveraged to maximise efficient coordination.

Balfour Beatty said it expects a workforce of 750 to be engaged at construction peak.

Gammon Chief Executive, Thomas Ho, said, “We are pleased to have secured this exciting development, where our expert capabilities and experienced team provides our client with the skilled partner they need to safely deliver complex projects.”
