Atlas Copco has acquired privately-owned Spanish generator manufacturer Gesan in a deal which it says will expand its current power portfolio and increase its presence in emerging markets. The price of the deal was not disclosed.

Gesan, which has a production and assembly facility in Zaragoza, Spain, reported revenues of € 56 million in 2010. Its generators are used for primary power supply and for standby purposes, and its range tops out at 4000 kVA (3200 kW) - nearly twice as high as Atlas Copco's current offering.

Europe and Russia are its most important markets, and the company has distributors in over 85 countries as well as an equipment rental operation.

Atlas Copco president and CEO Ronnie Leten said the acquisition complemented its business, with synergies in sales, service, purchasing and manufacturing expected as a result.

"Together with Gesan, we can offer a full range of generators for all kinds of applications, and we look forward to building relationships with new customers and distributors."

Restructured business

Atlas Copco will keep the Gesan brand and integrate the business into its new portable energy division, which was integrated into the company's Construction Technique division on 1 July. The portable energy division was formerly known as the portable air division, but was renamed to more accurately reflect its expanded portfolio of products.

The company has this year undertaken a global restructuring programme. In April, it split its Construction and Mining Technique (CMT) division into two separate groups - the new Construction Technique division and a Mining and Rock Excavation Technique business.
