Technology giant Amazon has announced that it is to invest US$3.5 billion in five new data centres in New Albany, Ohio, US. It is reported that they will be complete by 2030.

Construction will begin in 2025 on the five data centers and supporting buildings.

This investment is just the initial part of Amazon’s US$7.8 billion commitment to expand data centers in the state, which was first announced by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted earlier this year.

The Columbus area now has 40 data centers operated by 25 companies, according to a Baxtel study cited in the Columbus Dispatch. The agreement follows Google’s recent announcement last month of a planned US$1.7 billion expansion of its three data centers in New Albany.

A report last year predicted that the global data centre construction market is expected to reach a value of US$308.7 billion by 2027. According to the report by Grand View Research Inc, the growth is driven by the rising demand for data storage and processing capabilities and the increased use of big data analytics.
