Al Ain plans new transport system
15 April 2009
The United Arab Emirates' fourth largest city, Al Ain, is to construct a new public transport system within the next five to seven years and will see its population almost treble to 1 million by 2030, according to a new plan unveiled by Abu Dhabi's Urban Planning Council (UPC).
Under the Plan Al Ain 2030 a new high speed rail terminal will connect the city to Abu Dhabi and, eventually, Dubai.
The high speed railway will in turn connect to a new light railway system, which will see trams running along Khalifa Bin Zayed Street to a number of new stations including Tawam Hospital, UAE University and the Al Ain Mall.
No costs were given.
