Eight construction workers have been killed and 46 rescued after they were buried by an avalanche in the Himalayas.

The workers who were rescued survived for almost 60 hours in freezing temperatures in the metal containers that served as their accommodation.

The accident happened when the avalanche hit a construction camp near Mana village in India’s Uttarakhand state.

The labourers had been working on a highway widening project nearby.

They were rescued by members of the Indian army and national and state disaster response forces, using sniffer dogs, thermal imaging, drones and helicopters.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), which also took part in the rescue, said that the “relentless effort” to recover the workers had taken three days.
