Santiago needs 200 km Metro
03 August 2011
The Santiago, Chile underground rail network could be increased to as much as 200 km, according to Metro de Santiago de Chile president Raphael Bergoeing. Current expansion work will see the network grow from its current 103 km to 140 km by 2017.
The current work is focussed on the extension of Lines 3 and 6. In addition to the construction investment, Mr Bergoeing said a further 240 carriages would be required for the expanded network, and a tender worth US$ 350 million would be put out for these in 2012.
However, in the longer term, Mr Bergoeing said the city would require a metro network of some 200 km. The cost of extending the network from the 140 km it will be in 2017 to 200 km was put at US$ 2.76 billion by Mr Bergoeing.
