Boskalis Westminster has won the € 200 million (US$ 290 million) contract to construct the TX2 port terminal at the Açu super port industrial complex in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Boskalis is the second European company to win a major contract on the project in a matter of weeks, following the award of breakwater construction work worth US$ 560 million to Acciona in mid-July.

The scope of Boskalis' work, which is expected to take two years, includes the dredging of an access and inner channel, turning basin and harbour basin, as well as land reclamation work. The company will also construct revetments at the entrance to the harbour. Boskalis says the dredging work alone will involve moving more than 43 million m3 of material, some of which will be used for land reclamation and construction within the port.

Among the equipment Boskalis plans to employ on the scheme is a jumbo cutter suction dredger, two large trailing suction hopper dredgers and a clamshell dredger, along with supporting marine equipment and dry excavation equipment.
