The government of Mexico plans to allocate 126.9 billion pesos (US$6.6 billion) worth of public and private investment to the expansion and rehabilitation of 62 airports.

The move was announced by Mexico’s undersecretary of communications and transportation, Tania Carro Toledo, at the 4th National Transportation Infrastructure Forum.

A total of 33.7 billion pesos (US$1.8 billion) will be allocated this year.

Mexico has a total of 80 airports and 1,529 airfields but the Mexican government said that new economic conditions facing the country require action to upgrade its infrastructure.

Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) director of road maintenance, David Calderón also noted at the forum that the government is committed to preserving the country’s road infrastructure.

He explained that of the more than 40,000km of the Federal Toll-Free Highway Network, just over 10,000km correspond to the trunk network, through which more than 80 percent of commercial cargo circulates, so the agency will focus on addressing this problem.
