Ferrovial to build £230m high-voltage cable tunnel in UK
05 February 2025

Spain-based infrastructure company Ferrovial will build a high-voltage cable tunnel for the UK’s National Grid, under a construction contract worth £230 million (US$287.6 million).
The project is part of a broader set of infrastructure upgrades planned by the National Grid under what it calls The Great Grid Upgrade, an overhaul of the UK electricity network.
The 2.2km-long, high-voltage (400kv) cable tunnel running from Grain in Kent to Tilbury in Essex includes two 35m deep shafts (of 15m and 12m diameter respectively), headhouses and cable sealing end (CSE) compounds.
The project will be delivered by Ferrovial Construction and Ferrovial BEMO JV.
Ferrovial will use a Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM) on the project, which allows for simultaneous excavation and installation of the final lining from the surface. Ferrovial said the machine allows to reduce construction time at the same time as minimising the environmental impact.
Work starts from early this year, running until the first quarter of 2029.
