Egyptian contractor Orascom Construction has won two new contracts with the National Authority for Tunnels to build new transport projects in the country.

The first of the two contracts is for all civils works on the Greater Cairo Metro Line 4 – Package CP402. The line will run underground from Giza to Fustat, connecting existing lines 1 and 2.

Earlier this year, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) agreed a loan of US$306 million to fund the first phase of the line, which runs along a 19km route from the city centre to the pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The line is set to open to the public by 2028.

Under the second contract, Orascom Construction will lead a joint venture to execute the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) works for all stations of the first line of the new high-speed rail system in Egypt, which will run from Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh.

Both new contracts build on the Orascom’s existing main roles on both projects. It had previously announced that its consortiums will execute the Railway Systems, Track and Depot Works Package (CP411) for all of Cairo Metro Line 4, and will design, install, commission and maintain the full high-speed rail system.
