Caterpillar adds collision warning, payload options to medium wheel loaders
06 May 2025
Caterpillar has announced new technology features for its next generation medium wheel loaders, with a focus on jobsite safety, load accuracy and operator productivity.

The updates apply to the 950, 962, 966, 966 XE, 972, 972 XE, 980, 980 XE, 982 and 982 XE models.
A key addition is the Collision Warning System with Motion Inhibit, which combines radar and smart camera sensors to alert operators of hazards behind the loader and automatically stop the machine if a person or object is detected. The system includes colour-coded proximity zones – yellow, amber and red – and distinguishes human figures using bounding boxes displayed on the in-cab monitor.
“The system alerts operators and inhibits loader motion in the instant a machine transitions from an inactive to an active state,” said Frank Stadelmann, global product application specialist for medium wheel loaders at Caterpillar.
The package includes People Detection, Object Detection, and Motion Inhibit, which prevents reverse movement if an obstacle is present in the loader’s path after shifting out of neutral. The technology builds on existing safety tools such as the standard HD rear camera, optional 360° Multiview system and Rear Object Detection.
Also new is Cat Payload for Trade, an upgrade to Caterpillar’s Advanced Payload system. It delivers certified, legally approved payload data that can be sent to the office or directly via email.

“The system now captures weight and other data in a certified way,” said Stadelmann, “and integrates directly with business processes.”
Advanced Payload features now include tip-off assist, multitask mode (to track two loading jobs simultaneously), and split mode, which allows for loading multiple trucks while tracking individual targets.
Other technology updates include:
- Auto Set Tires for improved digging technique and fill factors
- Autodig for automated bucket cycles
- Programmable Kickouts for reduced operator fatigue
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System
- Remote Flash and Remote Troubleshoot functions
- Command for Loading, offering remote control via line-of-sight or from an off-site Command Station
Caterpillar says the upgrades allow customers to scale technology as needed, supporting everything from general construction and material handling to more demanding truck loading applications.
