Pile Dynamics introduces SQUID36: Compact device for rapid, real-time cleanliness testing in narrow drilled shafts

SQUID36 is the latest in drilled testing technology created to assess base cleanliness on small diameter drilled excavations.

Answering the industry need to test shaft bottom cleanliness on excavated holes with a minimum diameter of less than 45 cm (18 inches), Pile Dynamics, Inc. developed SQUID36, a narrow version of the widely accepted SQUID device. SQUID36 measures force as a function of penetration at the bottom of drilled shafts or bored piles.

During construction, sediment can fall to the excavation base, creating risk for concrete contamination. This contamination leads to a “soft bottom” or spongey section of the pile, which inevitably affects the pile load movement and capacity.

SQUID36 is lowered into a shaft until it locates the base where the weight of the Kelly bar transfers force of three penetrometers into loose debris and bearing layers to determine if additional clean out is necessary.

The entire test is completed quickly, typically less than 20 minutes – including attachment to the drill stem, testing and analysis.

Additionally, SQUID36 features quick attachment adapters for different sized drill stems.

SQUID36 provides real time, quantitative assessments to keep project timelines moving.
