In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will introduce a new digital platform for monitoring construction and demolition (C&D) waste by the end of July, according to a report in The Times of India.

It is hoped that the Integrated Construction & Demolition Waste Management Portal, set to track the waste generated in India’s largest city, will help eliminate illegal dumping while also improving recycling and material recovery rates.

The portal is being introduced in the face of Mumbai’s major redevelopment boom, which sees large volumes of demolition debris and excavated material generated every day.

The BMC wants to ensure that all waste is transported to authorised facilities rather than dumped illegally.

This will be done by tracking waste from generation through transportation to final disposal or recycling, supported by a number of measures, including a GPS/vehicle tracking and monitoring system, registration of contractors and project owners, waste management plan submissions, and digital approvals and compliance records.

The portal will also connect organisations with surplus excavated material to those needing fill for infrastructure or development projects. This ‘soil exchange platform’ supports circular economy principles by reducing unnecessary transport and disposal.

The initiative also aims to reduce dust pollution and improve environmental compliance. It is hoped that similar systems could be adopted by other major cities across India.
