WasteCo NZ and Porirua City Council open new C&D waste recycling facility in New Zealand

The new recycling plant, in Porirua near Wellington, is designed to process mixed construction and demolition materials to divert more waste from landfill and increase recovery of reusable materials.

Created through a partnership between waste management and industrial services company WasteCo NZ and Porirua City Council, the project is supported by New Zealand’s Waste Minimisation Fund, alongside Kāpiti Coast District Council and Hutt City Council.

At the core stands a fully integrated processing line that combines primary shredding, screening, manual sorting, air density separation, and flip-flow screening for wet and difficult materials.

This integrated approach is intended to maximise recovery rates while improving recycled material quality to support circular economy objectives.

The machines in the line up come from EDGE Innovate, delivered through New Zealand distributor Equip2, which also provides operator training and aftersales support.

They include an EDGE Slayer XL slow speed shredder for primary size reduction, EDGE MPS48 modular picking station for manual material sorting and an EDGE MC1400 Windshifter which removes light contaminants from heavy materials such as concrete, brick and recycled aggregates.

The project reflects increasing investment in large-scale C&D waste recycling infrastructure in New Zealand and demonstrates the advantages of a fully integrated process, compared to standalone recycling equipment, said EDGE Innovate.
