The Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) has signed a memorandum of understanding under which it will provide land for the construction of 240 wind generators along the sea walls of the west coast in the South Chungcheong Province of South Korea.

Korea East-West Power, Doosan Heavy Industry and Construction, and Posco Enginering and Construction have all stated their interest in building and operating the wind generators, with costs for the project expected to top WON 1.2 trillion (US$ 1 billion).

Feasibility and environmental impact studies are expected to start in May this year with construction scheduled to commence in the second half of 2011.

"The construction of these wind generators, both on top of the sea walls and possibly offshore too, will help the country cut back on green house gas emissions while providing clean electricity to some 400000 homes," said a spokesperson from KRC.
