Trimble launches smart target for optical and GNSS surveying

Trimble has launched the ST30 smart target, a surveying system that is said to combine optical measurement and GNSS capability in a single device.

Trimble says that the ST30 is designed for surveying and construction tasks including topographic surveys, stakeout, as-built verification and cadastral work.

It integrates a 360-degree prism, inertial measurement unit, GNSS receiver and automatic rod height measurement in one unit.

Trimble said the system can work with its robotic total stations, as well as Trimble Access, Trimble Siteworks, Trimble FieldLink, Trimble Business Center and Trimble Connect.

The device is intended to improve traceability and reduce errors by combining total station tracking with tilt compensation, automatic rod height measurement and target identification.

The ST30 includes tilt compensation for both optical and GNSS measurements, allowing surveyors to measure hard-to-access points with a tilted pole and reduce the need for manual offset calculations.

Trimble said automatic rod height measurement would help reduce errors caused by failing to update rod height, while active tracking and target ID are designed to prevent false locks and keep the total station focused on the assigned target.

Integrated high-accuracy GNSS will be available as a separate subscription from 2027. Trimble said this would allow users to work beyond optical line-of-sight and streamline site calibration and control setup.

Scott Crozier, senior vice president, civil construction at Trimble, said, “The ST30’s rugged design and automated features increase confidence on the job and reduce the potential for human error, which is particularly beneficial for an industry facing increased complexity, shorter deadlines and tighter tolerances.”
