Indian government approves construction of three chip factories worth US$15.2bn

The Indian government has approved the construction of three separate semiconductor fabs, which together will see the investment of US$15.2 billion.
The three units include the construction of a chip factory in Dholera, Gujarat, by a partnership between Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) and Tata Electronics Private Limited. The fab will produce high performance computer chips and power management chips and involves an investment of Rs 91,000 crore (US$11 billion), according to the website of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The second fab will see Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Limited build a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam serving the automotive, electric vehicle, consumer electronics and telecoms market. It involves a total investment of Rs 27,000 crore ($3.3 billion).
And the third plant will see CG Power, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand, set up a unit in Sanand, Gujarat.
Renesas focuses on specialized chips and the Rs 7,600 crore (US$916.8 million) plant will manufacture chips for the consumer, industrial, automotive and power sectors.
