Egypt has recently unveiled an ambitious project to construct a man-made river stretching for 114 kilometres.

The US$5.25 billion initiative, dubbed the ‘New Delta,’ will ensure access to sustainable water resources.

The project is located near the country’s airports and ports and is expected to generate employment opportunities in addition to achieving food security and reducing imports. Its primary aim, however, is to increase the agricultural land in Egypt since it is currently the world’s largest wheat importer.

According to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the New Delta project will be the largest project in the history of Egypt.

The New Delta project, situated along the Rod El Farag-El Dabaa axis road, is considered the backbone of Egypt’s agricultural industry. It covers a vast area of one million and fifty thousand acres, encompassing the entire Delta region.

Reports by the Egypt State Information Service website suggest that the project was initiated in April 2017.
