Subcontractors exchange lawsuits with Skanska–Balfour Beatty over US$5bn Microsoft project

According to reports, a joint venture between Sweden-based Skanska and UK-based Balfour Beatty is facing lawsuits from two subcontractors over alleged unpaid work on Microsoft’s US$5 billion Redmond campus redevelopment in Washington, US. The JV responded with a claim of its own.

Façade specialist Roschmann Steel & Glass Constructions and concrete contractor SAK Builders (both US firms) claim they are owed millions of dollars in costs tied to the East Campus Modernization portion of the redevelopment.
The lawsuits allege delays, unpaid change orders, and scope revisions not reflected in compensation.
Reports said Skanska–Balfour Beatty JV deny the claims and has submitted a counter suit.
Microsoft was not named as a defendant in the filings.
About the Microsoft Redmond campus construction project
The campus overhaul began in 2018 and spans 72 acres in Redmond, Washington. Work includes the demolition of 12 structures and construction of 17 new office buildings totalling nearly 3-million sq ft. New infrastructure includes a 1,100-ft pedestrian bridge across State Route 520 and underground parking for 6,500 vehicles.
The project also features a thermal energy centre, geothermal heating and cooling infrastructuree, and targets multiple green building certifications, including ILFI Zero Carbon and LEED Platinum.
Microsoft opened several buildings in late 2023. However, major work including interior completions and infrastructure upgrades continues across the remaining site. A recent expected completion date for the redevelopment was not available.
